The 27th Annual SJFB Foundation for Agricultural Education’s Taste of San Joaquin wine tasting event was held on March 15 at the Cabral Ag Center.

"Thank you to the wineries, restaurants, sponsors, the community and all those who helped out," said SJFB Foundation President Joe Valente. "The event is all about giving back and educating our youth."

The event showcased 14 local wineries and 18 food vendors and included live and silent auctions. Sponsors included 4 Platinum Sponsors, 13 Gold Sponsors, 12 Silver Sponsors and 13 Bronze Sponsors.

The wine tasting has generated nearly a half million dollars over the past 27 years for SJFB Foundation programs, which includes over $45,000 annually for scholarships to college students pursuing an agricultural-oriented curriculum.

"The success of this event is always because of the community’s involvement," said Rachael Fleming, SJFB program director. "We appreciate all those who support it by donating items and attending, and all the restaurants and wineries who participate in it. The Foundation Board deserves all of credit for all their hard work in making this a success year after year."

At the wine tasting, a tribute was given for longtime Foundation supporter and Board Member Bruce Mettler, who helped start the wine tasting fundraiser 27 years ago. "Because of leadership like Bruce Mettler and others, this event has helped get ag the kind of respect it deserves," said Paul Sanguinetti.

Foundation Vice President Brie Witt outlined the programs that the fundraiser helps support besides scholarships. Those programs include the Ag in the Classroom program to educate teachers about how to teach about agriculture in the classroom, the AgVenture program that gives hands-on learning to San Joaquin County’s third-graders, a Healthy Snacks program for fourth-graders, donating FFA jackets to local chapters, and educating students with a traveling cow called "Natalie the Cow." Several new programs are in the works for 2018 as well, such as partnering with 4-H for a series of summer camps for local students.

The San Joaquin Farm Bureau thanks all the participants in the SJFB Foundation Wine Tasting. We encourage all SJFB members to visit these establishments. They generously donated their resources, time and samples to make our "Taste of San Joaquin" a huge success.
